Grounds Crew History

Several years ago, a group of students who really enjoyed Illini baseball began attending all of the games together. They would sit in a group at Illinois Field and cheer together loudly for the team. When other students attended the games, they saw these wild fans, and many began to sit with the group. Soon this originally small group grew to become a collection of many students who all sat together to cheer on the Illini baseball team. The group was eventually adopted by Illini Pride and then became known officially as the Grounds Crew-one of the premier student cheering sections of Big 10 baseball.
Today the Grounds Crew hangs out near the Illinois dugout. This group not only cheers on the Illinois baseball team, creating a fun and hostile home environment, but also participates in fun events. Grounds Crews of the past have hosted barbecues, held bags tournaments, and sponsored giveaways for Illini fans. The Grounds Crew looks each year to increase student membership in order to better support the Fighting Illini baseball team.
